Course Structure
Course Structure
Module 1 - Melodies, Leads & Pads
After a brief introduction from your tutor Demis, you get straight into learning what typically makes an engaging trance melody. Using the powerful Vital synth (free download), you get to build an array of leads, pads and riffs with Demis's guidance, to lay down the melodic foundation in this uplifting trance track. You'll also learn how to use scales to find the right notes, create an arpeggio and see just how important it is to choose the right sounds in the first place, which really is the biggest factor in getting a full, energetic and powerful mix.
We use an incredible (and completely FREE) synthesizer called 'Vital'. Available for all platforms and all DAW's.
Module 2 - Kick / Bass / Percussion
In the 2nd module, you'll learn how to scuplt the foundation of your track, the hugely important low end. The kick and bass are always essential to get right in electronic music as they can often fight against each other. To help with this, Demis shows you how to analyze and adapt the fundamental frequencies so these important elements work together in unison. You'll also learn how to 'make way' for the kick by employing velocity techniques on the bass. After learning to split the bass into 3 different layers for more control, you'll move onto sourcing free trance samples from the net and how to EQ them so they fit better in the mix. Attention to detail here with the EQ and filters makes the difference between mediocre and fat drums.
Module 3 - Arrangement / Structure
A lot of producers do not realize the importance of good song structure. This could make or break your track. The idea here is to make the different sections of your track tell a story or take the listener on a journey, and essentially keep them engaged for the duration. In this tutorial, you'll build sections that bring down the energy and equally raise the tension, so that all the hands are in the air, providing the much needed release. A song should have a distinct push and pull effect or it just won't stand out enough over all the other tracks out there and it won't be engaging enough for the listener.
Module 4 - Atmosphere & FX
The special FX or sometimes referred to as 'ear candy' are absolutely essential in most electronic music but none more-so in trance. Whooshes, risers, down swoops, hall kicks etc. are essential in providing not only the polish on the track but also help tie the different sections together that we made in the last module. You'll learn how to choose the right sounds for the right section, and help these fit into the mix with EQ, compression, limiting, reverb and delay. Demis will also show you a nifty tip where you freeze the reverb of a chord and blend this into the mix to provide the much needed 'air' of a typical trance track. Learn from Demis's mixing experience on how to get these FX sounding their full potential.
Module 5 - Breakdown & Buildup
In this module you'll learn how to build a typical breakdown and build up section which is vital with the tension and release of trance music. You'll make your own hall kick (a kick with lots of reverb) and how to accentuate the reverb with a limiter and EQ. You'll also learn several tricks to make the drop section seem bigger and fatter. For example, filtering out the lows just before it hits, filtering the kick and snare rolls, decreasing the volume slowly and lots of automation to get everything sitting in the mix in its own space, all ready for the important and energetic drop section. Learning how to get maximum energy in the drop section (main section) is key and Demis is on hand to provide his tips and experience.
Module 6 - Mixing & Mastering
In the final module, you'll learn essential mixing and mastering skills which you can apply in your own productions.
Demis has a keen eye for detail and watching him mix the track 'over his shoulder' and applying precise EQ, adding filters, compression and limiting, you'll be well on your way in your own trance productions. Reverb is also a vital effect in trance and is sometimes under or over-used. Demis steers you in the right direction here - you're in safe hands!
The trance production knowledge that Demis imparts here cannot be understated in this start to finish tutorial. He always uses stock or free plugins so you can follow along and make the track yourself with no barriers.
